چکیده

We report the detection of pulsed X-ray emission from the binary millisecond pulsar PSR J0218+4232 in a 100 ks ROSAT HRI observation. The lightcurve deviates from a flat distribution at a ∼ 4.8σ level, showing a sharp main pulse with a duty cycle of ∼ 0.15 (350μs), compatible with smearing due to the scatter in the ROSAT clock calibration. The intrinsic width can be smaller than 100μs. There is an indication for a second peak at a phase separation of 0.47±0.01. The pulsed fraction is 37 ± 13%. No indication for a modulation at the orbital period of the binary system is found. This is the fourth millisecond pulsar showing modulation in X-rays at the radio-pulsar period. The sharp pulses, very similar to those of PSR B1821-24 and the Crab pulsar, point to a magnetospheric origin of the pulsed X-ray emission. The observed and derived parameters of PSR J0218+4232 and PSR B1821-24 are very consistent with the exception of the small pulsed fraction of PSR J0218+4232. The large unpulsed component in X-rays and that reported earlier in the radio domain can be explained by emission from a compact nebula with diameter ∼ 14′′.

High Resolution Spatial and Timing Observations of Millisecond Pulsar Psr J0218+4232 with Chandra

We report on high-resolution spatial and timing results for binary millisecond pulsar PSR J0218+4232 obtained with the Chandra HRC-I and HRC-S in imaging mode. The sub-arcsecond resolution image of the HRC-I (0.08-10 keV) showed that the X-ray emission from PSR J0218+4232 is consistent with that of a point source excluding the presence of a compact nebula with a size of about 14 for which we ha...

We report the detection of pulsed X-ray emission (4.9σ) from the binary millisecond pulsar PSR J0218+4232 in a 100 ks ROSAT HRI observation. The pulse profile shows a sharp main pulse and an indication for a second weaker pulse at ∼ 0.47 phase separation. The pulsed fraction is 37±13%. PSR J0218+4232 was several times in the field of view of the high-energy γ-ray telescope EGRET and a source po...

Likely Detection of Pulsed High-energy Γ-rays from Millisecond Pulsar Psr J0218+4232

We report on the likely detection of pulsed high-energy γ-rays from the binary millisecond pulsar PSR J0218+4232 in 100-1000 MeV data from CGRO EGRET. Imaging analysis demonstrates that the highly significant γ-ray source 2EG J0220+4228 (∼ 10σ) is for energies > 100 MeV positionally consistent with both PSR J0218+4232 and the BL Lac 3C66A. However, above 1 GeV 3C66A is the evident counterpart ,...

The likely detection of pulsed high-energy γ-ray emission from millisecond pulsar PSR J0218+4232

We report circumstantial evidence for the first detection of pulsed high-energy γ-ray emission from a millisecond pulsar, PSR J0218+4232, using data collected with the Energetic Gamma Ray Experiment (EGRET) on board the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory (CGRO). The EGRET source 3EG J0222+4253 is shown to be spatially consistent with PSR J0218+4232 for the energy range 100–300 MeV. Above 1 GeV the n...

Chandra and Rxte Studies of the X-ray/γ-ray Millisecond Pulsar Psr J0218+4232

We report on high-resolution spatial and timing observations of the millisecond pulsar PSR J0218+4232 performed with the Chandra X-ray Observatory (CXO) and the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE). With these observations we were able to study a) the possible spatial extent at X-ray energies of the DC source coincident with PSR J0218+4232 in detail (CXO), b) the relative phasing between the X-ra...
